Finland Swedish speech recognizer from Lingsoft

Helsinki, 21 Dec. 2008 – Lingsoft has released a 'Finland Swedish' speech recognizer which especially suits the realization of various automated speech services. Lingsoft also offers Finnish speech recognition software which now makes it easier to offer speech-controlled services in both national languages. Svenska kulturfonden has been involved in financing the project.

"A speech recognizer excellently supplements our products and services directed towards the Swedish-speaking public in Finland. The checking of style features by Swedish-speaking Finns contained in Svefix, our checker program, is utilized in many places – for instance, schools. Following this command-based speech recognition program, our goal is to also create a recognizer suitable for identifying dictation," says Juhani Sel�nniemi from Lingsoft.

"A speech recognition program helps those of us who speak Finland Swedish to gain access to various speech-controlled services. The objective of Svenska kulturfonden is to support various projects and solutions to improve the daily life of the Swedish-speaking populace – and this is a concrete project by which enterprises and other organizations can now offer speech-controlled services in Finland in Swedish as well. In Finland, speech-controlled services have not yet become common to the same extent as in many other European countries and particularly in the United States, where speech services are widely applied in, among other things, various subscription services, phone exchanges, bulletins and in unpacking dictation. It is expected that the situation in Finland too will change in the near future, however.

The purpose of the Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland (Svenska kulturfonden) is to support the cultural and educational aspirations of the Swedish-speaking population in Finland as well as a wide range of other activities promoting Swedish as a minority language in Finland. Lingsoft provides Finnish language resources to SVOX

The Finnish natural language processing pioneer Lingsoft has provided an automatically generated word stem list to Swiss-based SVOX, for the use in Finnish language development. SVOX develops small-footprint TTS and ASR solutions tailored for automotive and mobile industries, and therefore needs an efficient way to deal with the rich morphology of Finnish language, in which, a certain word can have fundamental stem changes when inflected. Lingsoft used its Finnish morphology analyzer and stem generator to produce adequate stems for a selected word list automatically.

"Lingsoft's technology saved SVOX a lot of manual work and provided us with an accurate systematically-generated stem list, which is a difficult task even for an experienced linguist. The technology was an important contributor to creation of a high quality small-footprint Finnish TTS," said David Hagstrand, Head of Linguistics at SVOX.

"Various SVOX TTS systems are already used in many products available on the Finnish market, such as automotive infotainment systems and personal navigation systems, but without support for our native language. Lingsoft selected as translation service provider for Finland's state administration

Helsinki, 24.2.2009 – Hansel Ltd, the central procurement unit of the Finnish Government, has selected PasaNet Oy, part of the Lingsoft Group, as its framework agreement provider of English, Swedish and Russian translation services. Lingsoft has signed a four-year framework agreement with Hansel Ltd to provide translations for the procurement units of the State administration. The agreement strengthens Lingsoft's position as one of the main suppliers of public administration translations. The total value of the agreement is estimated at 6 million euros and will involve several vendors.

"We have supplied translations to Finnish ministries and public administration organisations for close to 10 years. The translation agreement with Hansel Ltd means that we will be able to extend our services, providing Lingsoft's high quality language services and solutions to both our existing customers and new translation service buyers within the State administration," says Lingsoft Sales Director Ilona Eloranta. "The agreement will allow us to expand our new project and document management system and thus enhance and consolidate cooperation with our translation clients from the State administration. The system is already being used successfully in all of our EU translation projects," says Eloranta.

The translation service framework agreement with Hansel Ltd is the first of its kind in Finland. 2008-10-28 – Lingsoft's high quality proofing tools integrated with Infomaker's Newspilot editorial platform have, in a short space of time, conquered a significant slice of the Swedish markets. Infomaker has secured a considerable number of new clients for its editorial platform. As a result a notable part of Swedish press now uses Lingsoft's language technology.

The Finnish language technology provider Lingsoft has released a Simple User-defined Rule Extension plug-in – SURE for short – as the latest instalment in their proofing programming library. This allows the user to create simple stylistic rules dynamically with no update of the proofing tool required. SURE supports Lingsoft Proofreader Server, the new Lingsoft Proofreader for Adobe InDesign tools including grammar and style checkers, as well as several programs by Lingsoft's OEM partners.

Flexible and Accurate Automatic Proofing

The SURE plug-in allows the user to create custom rules for the identification of issues such as mispelt forms of difficult proper nouns – including capitalisation; take for instance al-Qaida and Osama bin Laden. This type of rules also allow you to lay down custom guidelines, for instance regarding the preferred consistent spelling of Beijing or Peking. As regular expressions are supported for any identified string and for its suggested replacement, the SURE rules are rather effective when it comes to combing out certain types of stylistic faults. They are not, however, a substitute for the grammatical and stylistic rules included in the actual Lingsoft proofing tools.

MS SharePoint Search Enriched for Finnish and Scandinavian languages
Turku, March 6, 2008 – Lingsoft and Neoxen have jointly developed a Microsoft SharePoint extension significantly increasing the accuracy of the SharePoint search engine when searching through documents written in morphologically rich languages, such as Finnish and Scandinavian languages.

This extension, which is called Lingsoft SearchExpander for SharePoint and installed on the same server as SharePoint, was unveiled in the "Arjen sankareita ja sankaritarinoita" event organized by Microsoft at the Finlandia House in Helsinki on Thursday March 6th. The attractively priced search expander will enter the market in the second quarter of 2008.

"It is common knowledge that search engine accuracy is poor when used for searching through texts written in a morphologically rich language. This is due to numerous inflections in the language. For instance, only about one out of seven words in a Finnish text is presented in its base form. This is why enriching the search index with the base forms of the words appearing in the document has been found to be a good way to improve search results. Lingsoft has already applied this proprietary technology for analyzing words and sentences to several customer projects. Now for the first time the feature is available as an easy-to-install extension to the popular SharePoint search engine," says Lingsoft CEO Juhani Reiman.

Lingsoft Search Expander for SharePoint is installed on the same server as Microsoft SharePoint. Users of the SharePoint search engine will see the power of the search expander as the search also finds the documents where the desired word only appears in some of its inflected forms. The number of documents found can as much as quadruple compared to a basic search.

Lingsoft delivers eight new spell checkers to Microsoft Corp.
Turku, December 20th, 2007 - Lingsoft, Inc. has entered into an agreement with Microsoft Corp. to deliver spell checkers for eight new languages. The deliveries started in April and will be in progress till next year.

The new spell checkers cover six Central Asian languages and two small European languages. All these languages are official languages of their respective countries, and they are spoken by a total of more than 70 million people.

"We have been working with Lingsoft since the 1990's, and they have a long and distinguished track record in Proofing Tools for the Nordic Languages, German, and Kiswahili for Microsoft Office," said Jason Redford, Senior Program Manager of Microsoft Proofing Tools, Dublin. Turku, June 5th, 2007 – Lingsoft, Inc. has licensed its Kiswahili Spell Checker to Microsoft Corp. The companies have entered into an agreement in which Microsoft has an option to utilize the Kiswahili Speller in Microsoft Office. The new Kiswahili Spell Checker will be part of Microsoft's Local Language Program.

The Kiswahili Spell Checker is a high coverage – high precision spell checking tool. It is based on Lingsoft's gold standard technology, and it was developed in cooperation with leading experts in East African languages.

New Multi-Lingual Proofing Tools from Lingsoft
Lingsoft has launched three new programming libraries allowing software developers to implement features such as spell-checking, grammar checking, hyphenation and inflecting thesauri in applications that have long been in want of them. These programming libraries and the related proofing and style checking resource files support all major operating systems including Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. With the Java and Ajax extensions they can also be suited to Java and network browser UI applications used commonly in a number of business applications.

– There seems to be a wider recognition of the fact that text is not longer typed and edited solely on text processing tools. Take Microsoft Office, for instance, where our high-quality proofing tools for Nordic languages have long been a standard issue. We wish to make proofing tools of equal calibre available for other text processing applications too, says Juhani Reiman managing director of Lingsoft.

Applications like these include ERP and CRM systems used by companies and the public sector. The first proofing application based on the new programming libraries was introduced at the International IFRA Expo held earlier this month in Amsterdam.

– Those having shown the keenest interest in our new tools include editors of various publishing systems. This is only natural as spelling provides an important quality factor for their customers. But I'm sure that this is not the only business looking for ways to improve productivity and quality of text processing by means of a competent proofing facility, which is designed to comb out any spelling mistakes here and now. Think of just medical records processed by tens of thousands of professionals in this country alone and mostly with no professional proofing tools available. This is where Lingsoft's new programming libraries come in by providing assistance in form of clear application programming interface descriptions for the developers, says Mr Reiman.

Lingsoft's proofing tools include three programming libraries. LSPROOF equips the parent application with spell-checking and grammar checking and LSHYPH allows for hyphenation while LSTHES provides the synonym search. The programming libraries enable engagement of language resource files of various languages. These files have been compiled using Lingsoft's world-renowned language modelling techniques such as two-level morphology model, TWOL and constraint grammar parser, CG. These allow creating high-quality proofing tools also for languages with highly challenging word structures such as Finnish.

Turku 29.08.2006 – Through stock purchase completed in July, Lingsoft, which offers language technology solutions, became the main owner of Ellibs Oy, a supplier of ebooks. The sellers were Innofinance and Teollisuussijoitus, both capital investment trusts.

This merger consolidates Ellibs' economy, technological foundation and customer service. From the perspective of Lingsoft and its clients, this concerns an improvement in services. The merger significantly complements Lingsoft's language management solutions directed towards business enterprises.

Four years ago the Kasarminm�ki Expertise Centre in Kouvola started contacting skilful people in the fields of Finnish language technology and language services, producers of learning and manual materials as well as other partners, in order to create joint network cooperation. Along the way a goal was formed to generate a national cluster in Finland for multilingual communication and content management, first ever in Europe.

A language technology research group representing three universities, the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation (TEKES), the Ministry of Trade and Industry (KTM) and regional financiers have joined the co-operative development process that has already lead to tens of projects and project build-ups.

On the 26th of October 2006 the vast preparations will become reality in the form of a symposium that bears the name KITES – symposium for multilingual communication and content management.

KITES will gather professionals in the field of language and their key customers into a joint strategic forum, where people from export companies' communication managers, language-, news- and advertising agencies, translators, organisations and decision makers to educational organisations have the chance to form networks with each other. Speeches and marketing stands will provide information on current services and situation as well as future development prospects of language technology. Networking continues in the evening gathering among colleagues.

Companies, researchers and trainers that have been involved thus far will present among other things the Finnish strategy for language cluster and the desktop for multilingual communication, considered to be an internationally significant move. 7.4.2005 – Lingsoft has closed a major deal with Microsoft to renew for the second time the contracts of approximately half of the proofing tools that Lingsoft has developed and licensed to Microsoft. In conjunction with this deal, Lingsoft will also review and update the entire set of proofing tools the company has licensed to Microsoft in order to ensure continued full conformance with Microsoft's technical, security and linguistic quality standards, including the latest changes in several national spelling conventions, among others.

Wide Variety of Language Tools
The proofing tools covered by these agreements add up to 21 tools in all, including the full suite of grammar-checkers, spell-checkers, hyphenators and thesauri for Swedish, Danish, Norwegian (Bokm�l) and Finnish, a spell-checker and hyphenator for Norwegian (Nynorsk), and the suite of a spell-checker, hyphenator and thesaurus for German (covering both pre-reform and post-reform spelling conventions). Lingsoft and TEMIS Announce Partnership to Expand Text Mining Coverage to Northern European Language
Paris, France, Helsinki, Finland, March 8, 2005 – TEMIS, the leading Text Mining software vendor in Europe and Lingsoft, a Natural Language Processing specialist, today announced that they have signed a Bilateral Collaboration Agreement.

Under the terms of this agreement, TEMIS will expand the linguistic coverage of its software solutions to support 16 languages. The TEMIS products, XeLDA�, Insight Discoverer Extractor, Insight Discoverer Categorizer, Insight Discoverer Clusterer and XTS, will now integrate the Lingsoft set of Northern European languages.

Insight Discoverer(TM) Categorizer is a document categorization engine. It categorizes automatically unstructured documents into pre-defined categories, combining linguistic and statistic rules. Insight Discoverer(TM) Categorizer uses linguistic analysis performed by Insight Discoverer(TM) Extractor, which describes documents by generating their semantic profile. Insight Discoverer(TM) Categorizer then uses this for its learning and assignment phases.

XTS is a software suite that helps you create your corporate terminology and uses it to improve the consistency and quality of the documents you produce. Key applications of terminology are:

Automatic creation of terminology

15.2.2005 – Lingsoft Oy and Imagetalk Oy seek major mutual synergy effects with an ownership and financing arrangement, where Lingsoft becomes a major shareholder of Imagetalk. Lingsoft is a language technology company, offering novel solutions for managing and understanding languages. Imagetalk is a company specialized in customizable user interfaces for special needs.

Mutually Complementary Technologies

23.3.2004 – Lingsoft, the Finnish language technology company, and PasaNet, the translation services agency, are joining forces. The move was accomplished through an exchange of shares, both enterprises remaining separate joint stock companies. Lingsoft's principal client has for many years been Microsoft Corporation. Lingsoft has developed a number of language tools used in Microsoft's products. The languages covered include the Nordic languages and German.

Lingsoft - an Expert in Language and Speech Technology
Lingsoft's expertise is mainly based on the word and sentence analysis technologies originally developed by Professor Kimmo Koskenniemi and Professor Fred Karlsson at the University of Helsinki. The resulting methods are language-independent and they have already been applied to more than ten languages at Lingsoft. Among the products developed by the company is a speech recognition solution that can be used, for example, in telephone exchanges, and database services such as timetable inquiries. Lingsoft's main products are various proofing and spelling tools.

PasaNet - a Technical Translation Company Specializing in Language Technology
PasaNet Oy has been in the translation business since 1993. It specialises in technical translation and localisation. The company is the principal supplier of translations for the European Parliament for Finnish. Among the clients are also major international companies in the IT, electronics, and automotive industries. The company uses state-of-the-art technology. PasaNet is one of the largest translation agencies in Finland, employing some 30 people and providing translations for all the main European languages.
