Congratulations for choosing Lingsoft Proofreader for Adobe InDesign, a plug-in that provides high-quality spell-checking, grammar and style checking, and hyphenation for Adobe InDesign/InCopy.

Unlike traditional proofing tools Lingsoft Proofreader does not draw on simple word lists. Our solution is based on our proprietary two-level morphology model (TWOL) allowing the application to identify word derivatives, related compounds and inflections.

Lingsoft Proofreader for Adobe InDesign is available for Windows and Mac OS X platforms, for the following languages:
  • Finnish
  • Swedish
  • Norwegian Bokmål
  • Nynorsk: no grammar checking
  • Danish
  • German: no grammar checking

This User's Guide covers the following versions: CS2 on Mac OS X

  3. Start Adobe InDesign, and follow the instructions below.
Note! Due to reasons beyond our scope, if you need to reinstall Lingsoft Proofreader for Adobe InDesign, you might first have to remove the current installation in order to proceed with the new installation successfully. This applies both for Windows and Mac OS X versions.

Using the Program

Enable Lingsoft Proofreader by selecting Edit > Preferences > Dictionary in the Adobe InDesign program. In Language options, select the appropriate language and then Lingsoft Proofreader in the Hyphenation and Spelling options. For more information on specifying dictionaries or language see Adobe InDesign documentation.

More accurate and adapted specifically to the target language, the hyphenation facility of Lingsoft Proofreader works just like the native Adobe InDesign hyphenation. Enable or disable Hyphenation per paragraph as follows:

  1. Double-click the desired style in the Paragraph Styles palette.
  2. In the Edit... window, select Hyphenation on the list in the following Paragraph Style Options dialog box.
  3. Enable or disable hyphenation by selecting the Hyphenate check box.

Please note the use of custom hyphenation dictionaries. For more information on hyphenation settings see Adobe InDesign documentation.

Lingsoft Proofreader works basically like the native Adobe InDesign spell-checking facility. Custom dictionary is also available.

The Proofing Menu

Use custom hyphenation and proofing dictionaries in Lingsoft Proofreader like you would use the dictionaries of the native Adobe InDesign hyphenation and proofing tools. Entries added to the custom dictionaries are available in both Lingsoft Proofreader and the native hyphenation and proofing tools. For more information on user dictionaries see Adobe InDesign documentation.

Lingsoft user dictionaries

With Lingsoft Proofreader it is possible to use also Lingsoft's own LSPROOF user dictionaries. This usage is separate from InDesign's user dictionary system and you cannot edit LSPROOF user dictionaries within InDesign. The benefit of using LSPROOF user dictionary is, that you can point the user dictionary to a common path, and thus have a corporate-wide user dictionary for all your InDesign/InCopy users.

The locations and the codings of Lingsoft user dictionaries are set in a configuration file. Names of these files in different products are:

bokmål: nob_proof_user_dictionary.conf
dansk: dan_proof_user_dictionary.conf
Deutsch Post: ger.new_proof_user_dictionary.conf
nynorsk: nno_proof_user_dictionary.conf
suomi: fin_proof_user_dictionary.conf
svenska: swe_proof_user_dictionary.conf

There are two possible locations for the configuration files:
  1. user folder's subfolder "Lingsoft Proofreader" (in Mac OS X: "Joe > Lingsoft Proofreader")
  2. the same folder as Proofreader (by default Applications > Adobe Indesign CS2 > Plug-Ins > Dictionaries > Lingsoft)

For each user dictionary there is a line in the configuration file. Each line consists of the full path of the user dictionary and the coding of the user dictionary, separated by a tabulator. There are four possible codings for the user dictionaries: LATIN1, CP1252, MACROMAN and UTF8. Example of a configuration file:

\commondriveproofreadercorporate.txt UTF8
c:Docsuser_dict.txt UTF8

Grammar Checker

Lingsoft Proofreader adds grammar checker functionality to Adobe InDesign CS2. Grammar errors are marked with green underline. By control-clicking on the error you can see information about the error. The information can contain correction suggestions, one of which you can select to replace the underlined text.

In the Proofreader preferences dialog (Edit > Preferences > Lingsoft Proofreader) you can select the underline colour and the grammar rules that are active. The list of grammar
rules is shown when you click on the blue info ballon under "Grammar and Style Errors".

To achieve compatibility with systems not having Lingsoft Proofreader installed,
Lingsoft Proofreader strips the grammar data from the document on document close. If your workflow contains only systems where Lingsoft Proofreader is installed, you can unselect "Strip Grammar Data on Document Close", which makes the opening of the document faster.

System requirements

  • Adobe InDesign CS2
  • Mac OS X 10.2.8 or newer.
  • 10 MB free disk space

How do you know that you are using Lingsoft Proofreader?
Go to InDesign > Preferences > Dictionary... dialog, and Select the language of your Lingsoft Proofreader. If Lingsoft Proofreader is selected in the Hyphenation and Spelling popup menus, then it is in use. See the first issue in Known issues chapter to find out the limit of this rule.

Hyphenation misses self-evident syllabic boundaries.
Boundaries between words, and especially those in compound words, are not always clear-cut, even if we are not aware of this. The program builds compound words quite freely – a function, which increases the number of possible interpretations.

Changes made to the user dictionary have no desired effect.
Adobe InDesign automatically applies user dictionaries to hyphenation and proofing so that Lingsoft Proofreader cannot intervene. This is why the user dictionaries fail to identify inflected forms of words the way Lingsoft Proofreader does and, therefore, each form of inflection needs to be entered individually. See Custom Hyphenation and Proofing Dictionaries in this guide.

Known issues

  1. When you have changed the hyphenator provider, the changes are not effective until you have restarted InDesign.
  2. Adobe InDesign CS and CS2 divides words after colon. Lingsoft Proofreader can't change that behaviour.
  3. The spelling options in 'InDesign > Preferences > Spelling...' dialog have no effect on Lingsoft Proofreader.
  4. Changing dictionary provider fails sometimes. You can change only either hyphenation or spelling dictionary provider in one dialog session. If you change them both, hyphenation provider isn't changed and you have to change it again.
